Material Composition
Made from high‑grade Polyethylene (PE) thermoplastic polymer — microporous membrane with controlled pore structure to enable ion transport while electrically isolating electrodes.
Physical & Structural Properties
Thickness: Typically 6 µm – 25 µm depending on application (industrial, traction, mono/flat plate batteries) — thinner films for higher energy applications, thicker films for mechanical durability.
Porosity:≥ 40 – 60 % (porous volume ratio) — ensures electrolyte uptake and ion flow.
Pore Size: Micro‑/nano‑scale pores (nm range) with uniform distribution for controlled ionic transport.
Density: Optimized for stable battery performance (varies by manufacturer).
Mechanical Performance
Tensile Strength: High mechanical strength for handling during manufacturing and cell assembly.
Puncture Resistance: Good resistance to penetration and folding.
Dimensional Stability: Low shrinkage and stable dimensions under operating temperatures.
Electrical & Electrochemical
Electrical Insulation: Excellent dielectric barrier — prevents internal short circuits.
Low Ionic Resistance: Enables efficient ionic conductivity through pores.
Thermal Properties
Thermal Stability: Maintains structure within service temperature range (PE melt point ~120‑135 °C).
Shutdown Behavior: At higher temperatures, PE may shrink to block ion passage — a safety feature in some designs.
Chemical Resistance
Resistant to battery electrolyte environments (e.g., sulfuric acid in lead‑acid batteries) with minimal degradation.
Moisture & Impurities
