Mopani Copper Mines (Glencore subsidiary — Mufulira and Nkana operations) operates one of the deepest and most water-intensive copper mines in the world. Our underground workings have a severe aquifer intersection at the 800m–1,200m levels, and our dewatering capacity is operationally critical — if the pumps fail, the mine floods within hours. For this mission-critical application, we have been running WPIL centrifugal dewatering pumps at our Nkana shaft complex for 11 years, and their performance record has been exceptional. Our current configuration runs 16 WPIL units (750kW to 1,200kW duty) at depths up to 950m, handling a combined 480,000 litres per minute. The API 610 certification, quality of impeller metallurgy (high-chrome wear-resistant casting), and the responsiveness of WPIL's technical team to our operating conditions are the reasons we keep specifying them over European alternatives — at a 30–35% cost advantage. The spare parts availability through WPIL's Lusaka agent (Industrial Hydraulics) is also a critical factor: we have had emergency replacement parts air-freighted from Mumbai to Ndola Airport (NLA) within 48 hours of a breakdown call — that kind of supply chain responsiveness is not available from European manufacturers at any price point. Indian industrial equipment has genuinely changed the economics of Zambian copper mining.

Ndola Teaching Hospital serves the Copperbelt Province — approximately 2.2 million people across one of Africa's most urbanised and industrially complex regions. Our pharmacy procures from Indian WHO-GMP manufacturers through the Medical Stores Limited (MSL — Zambia's national pharmaceutical procurement and distribution agency) and through supplementary PEPFAR-programme procurement. Indian medicines — Cipla, Aurobindo, Sun Pharma, Ipca — represent roughly 65–70% of our pharmaceutical procurement by value. The quality is consistently excellent, WHO-GMP certified, and the cost advantage over European-branded equivalents is significant: for antiretrovirals (TLE fixed-dose combination, recently transitioning to DTG regimens), the Indian generic price is 60–70% lower than the originator brand, which means we can treat three times more patients with the same budget. What makes Zambia an easy market for Indian pharmaceutical exporters is two things: no Halal restriction at all (we are a predominantly Christian country — standard gelatin capsules are perfectly fine, no labelling complications), and the ZAMRA registration pathway for WHO-GMP products is well-organised. I strongly encourage more Indian manufacturers to enter ZAMRA registration — the Copperbelt hospital network alone represents significant commercial opportunity.

Our company — Copperbelt Pharmacy Distributors — imports pharmaceutical products from India and distributes to approximately 140 private pharmacies across Lusaka, Ndola, Kitwe, Kabwe, and Livingstone. India is our exclusive pharmaceutical source: Cipla, Torrent, Cadila/Zydus, USV, Mankind Pharma. The business model works because Zambia's no-Halal environment removes the most complex layer of pharmaceutical documentation — no Halal gelatin certificates required, no Arabic labelling required, no OIC certification paperwork. For a pharmaceutical importer, this simplicity is commercially valuable. The three-port corridor structure for Zambia actually works in our favour: we use Beira Port (Mozambique) for our fastest-turn pharmaceuticals — Mumbai to Beira is 11 days by sea, then 2 days trucking to Lusaka via Chirundu. Total 13–14 days Mumbai to Lusaka warehouse. For non-urgent bulk orders, we use Durban (South Africa) which has the best cold-chain infrastructure for temperature-sensitive products. My recommendation for Indian pharma exporters entering Zambia: budget 18–24 months for ZAMRA registration, but use that time to build distributor relationships in Lusaka — the market is ready, the margins are good, and Zambia's PEPFAR programme creates the most reliable institutional demand you will find anywhere in Southern Africa.
