STRENGTHENING TRADE INDIA & RWANDA

At CAMERWA (Central Medicines Procurement and Distribution Agency), we are the main government pharmaceutical buyer for Rwanda's public health system. Indian generics — WHO-GMP certified from Cipla, Aurobindo, and Sun Pharma — account for about 60–65% of our ARV procurement and a significant share of our anti-malarial and antibiotic tenders. Rwanda's pharmaceutical procurement is fully digitized — eTender system, pre-qualified supplier lists, automatic compliance checks. Indian manufacturers who have WHO-GMP pre-qualification and EAC registration are automatically eligible for our tenders. One major advantage for Indian exporters in Rwanda: there is NO Halal requirement — we are predominantly Christian (~90%), and this simplifies procurement documentation enormously versus our neighbours. Air freight to Kigali International Airport for temperature-sensitive products (KGL has a new cold-chain facility) takes 8–12 hours from Nairobi — making the supply chain extremely responsive for emergency stock requirements.

Kigali is experiencing a construction boom that most people outside Rwanda don't appreciate — the city is transforming fast. The Kigali Master Plan targets massive urbanisation. At Inyarwanda Construction, we use Indian ceramic tiles (Kajaria and Asian Granito — 30% below European equivalent quality), Indian rebar (JSW Steel — consistent quality, good mill certs), and Indian PVC pipes (Supreme Industries) for all our projects. The logistics via Mombasa/Northern Corridor takes about 20–22 days total from Mumbai to Kigali site delivery — acceptable for a construction schedule. RRA customs clearance is truly remarkable — 24–36 hours with complete documentation; I've had shipments clear faster in Rwanda than in Kenya. One practical tip for Indian suppliers: Rwanda uses the EAC Common External Tariff — building materials typically attract 25% duty on CIF value, which we factor into our project budgets. Worth it for the quality advantage of Indian tiles over Chinese alternatives at similar price points.

We operate coltan and cassiterite mines in Eastern Province (Ngoma district) — Rwanda's most active 3TG mining zone. Indian mining equipment — especially WPIL slurry pumps for our processing operations and Kirloskar centrifugal pumps for mine dewatering — has been consistently reliable over the 6 years we've sourced from Indian suppliers. The price advantage versus South African or European alternatives is significant: typically 25–35% less for equivalent ISO 9001 quality. The logistics is straightforward: Northern Corridor via Mombasa, transit to Kigali in about 18–20 days from Mumbai, then 2-day trucking to our mine sites in Ngoma. RMB (Rwanda Mines Board) simply requires ISO 9001 and standard CE safety marking for our equipment — no special mining regulatory certification for equipment suppliers. Rwanda's OECD mineral due diligence compliance actually helps us attract premium-paying European buyers, and our Indian equipment suppliers benefit indirectly from our verified responsible sourcing credentials.
